Cyclone George kills two, Jacob advances

WITH two people confirmed dead and many injured by Cyclone George, residents of Western Australia's Pilbara region must now brace for Cyclone Jacob.

Jacob has done an about-face on its trek towards Christmas Island and is advancing towards the storm-battered West Australian coast. It could cross the Pilbara coast tomorrow or Monday, said Tony Wedd of the Bureau of Meteorology.

Cyclone George was still causing widespread flooding in the Pilbara as it headed for the mining town of Newman last night, he said. 'That's the next population centre in its path. I expect they are well and truly battened down by now."
