Magnitude-4.7 earthquake hits central California

Bridgeport, California, March 9 (AP): A light earthquake struck the mountains of Central California, but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage.

The quake Thursday evening had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was centred about 114 miles east of Sacramento, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

Calls inquiring about the temblor were pouring in to the sheriff's department, but no injuries or damage were immediately reported, a dispatcher said.

At the Bridgeport Inn, the quake rattled the nerves of some guests, said manager Dennis Williams.
