Chanchu battering parts of the Phillippines

Chanchu is battering parts of the Philippines with damaging winds and torrential, flooding rain. As of late Thursday morning, EDT, Chanchu was a typhoon with highest sustained winds of 85 mph about a center which was near northern Samar Island, or about 325 miles east-southeast of Manila, the national capital; it was moving west-northwestward at 13 mph. Chanchu is forecast to weaken and lose typhoon strength as it passes over the northern half of the Philippine Archipelago. By late Friday or Friday evening, the storm is projected to reach the South China Sea where it will strengthen anew as it moves away from the Philippines.
