Typhoon Chanchu slams southern China coast

SHANGHAI, China - A powerful typhoon pummeled southern China on Thursday, killing at least eight people and leaving 27 Vietnamese fishermen missing after their boats sank in Chinese waters. Typhoon Chanchu — the most severe storm to strike the South China Sea region during the month of May — has killed at least 48 people in Asia, including 37 in the Philippines last weekend. It hit the coast of China as a typhoon early Thursday — flooding scores of homes and forcing the evacuation of almost 1 million people — before weakening to a severe tropical storm.
